KANNAWIDAN – WE ARE ILOCANOS
“Kannawidan, Kannawidan, No
kinapintas ti sapsapulem, Ilocos Sur pakakittam.” – That is the first stanza of
the theme song of the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival.
KANNAWIDA FESTIVAL. A festival in the Province of Ilocos Sur commemorating the separation of the two Ilocos provinces in 1818. This festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. Kannawidan also known as tawid which means inheritance or heritage. Kannawidan Ylocos Festival is one of the famous festivals in Ilocos Sur. It is a celebration of Ilocos Sur’s abundant culture and traditions, and its separation from Ilocos Norte.
Kannawidan
Ylocos Festival reminds Ilocanos about the traditions that were lived by the
ancient Ilocanos. It educates, especially us young generations, of what the
culture of the Ilocanos were. It also tells us that Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte
were just one province then and that is why as part of the celebration is the
commemoration of their separation.
Kannawidan
Ylocos Festival is not just a celebration but it is part of our culture. It is
one of the biggest festivals being celebrated in the Philippines. It is one
that we should be proud of as Ilocanos.
