Philippine Independence
Philippine Independence, the most significant event in our country’s history.
July 12, 1898, where the first president of the Philippines Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the independence from the Spanish colonialization. During the Spanish-American War, Filipino rebels led by Emilio Aguinaldo proclaim the independence of the Philippines after 300 years of Spanish rule. By mid-August, Filipino rebels and U.S. troops had ousted the Spanish, but Aguinaldo’s hopes for independence were dashed when the United States formally annexed the Philippines as part of its peace treaty with Spain. The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected president and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during World War II, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Republic of the Philippines attained its independence. Philippine Independence is indeed the most significant event in our history because our country gained freedom from the invaders. It is a sign of greatness for those who fought for it.
Another thing that made this event significant is that our country became a republic. It has created its own constitution which until now is being observed. A lot of first things were introduced. The first president. The first national anthem. The first Philippine Flag.
Philippine independence became a battle cry for everyone. Freedom. Freedom to whatever it may serve. But now it seems this freedom became abused by the people. The freedom of speech which has been used not only to give the best and truthful information but also the false ones. May the Filipino people observe the true meaning of the Philippine Independence. Not being independent to what anyone can do even if it can harm anybody else.
